Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on all the things we’re grateful for. Here at Lockwood Family Dental, we’re especially thankful for the opportunity to care for you and your loved ones’ smiles year-round. Our mission is to provide excellent dental care that keeps your family’s smiles healthy and thriving. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love—helping people maintain healthy teeth for a healthy body!
National Brush Day
Did you know November 1st is National Brush Day? It was first recognized in 2013 as part of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign, right after Halloween—a time when sweets are everywhere! The goal of this day is to remind parents about the importance of good brushing habits for their children’s healthy teeth and healthy bodies.
After indulging in Halloween candy, Thanksgiving pies, and Christmas treats, it’s easy for dental hygiene to take a back seat. But this season of sweets is the perfect time to reinforce the importance of brushing and flossing. Remind your children that brushing doesn’t have to be a chore—it just takes two minutes, twice a day to maintain a healthy smile.
You can even make brushing fun by turning it into a family activity. Play a song, brush together, or create a brushing chart with a reward for the family member with the best record. And don’t forget to remind your kids to brush gently around the gum line and reach the back teeth!
Healthy Teeth, Healthy Body
As Walt Disney once said, “I am rarely sick because I brush my teeth.” And he was right! Daily brushing removes harmful bacteria and food particles that can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and other health issues. Healthy teeth play a significant role in maintaining a healthy body, as poor oral health can contribute to other conditions, including osteoporosis and heart disease.
As we age, maintaining strong teeth and bones becomes even more important. Tooth loss affects one in three adults over 65, often linked to osteoporosis, which weakens the jawbone and can lead to tooth loss. A diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D, along with consistent brushing and flossing, can help keep both your teeth and bones strong.
This Thanksgiving, help your family be thankful for their healthy smiles by encouraging good brushing and flossing habits. And remember, better oral health means fewer missed school days for kids and fewer workdays lost for parents due to dental problems.
