If the nerve of your tooth becomes infected, injured, or decayed, you may be recommended root canal therapy to remove the damaged tissue and restore your tooth. This endodontic procedure is often preferred over extraction, as it allows you to retain your natural tooth and restore its full function and appearance without affecting adjacent teeth or requiring more invasive treatments like implants.
Root Canal Therapy is Recommended When:
- Deep decay that has reached the tooth’s pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth)
- Trauma or injury to the tooth
- Infection or abscess within the tooth or at the root tip
During a root canal, our dental team will carefully remove the infected pulp, nerve tissue, bacteria, and any decay inside the tooth. After thoroughly cleaning the area, the tooth is filled with a medicated material and sealed to protect it from future damage. A temporary crown is usually placed to protect the tooth while the final crown is custom-made. Once ready, the permanent crown will be placed to fully restore the tooth’s strength, functionality, and appearance.
Most root canals can be completed in just two visits. Our dentist will evaluate your tooth and determine the best course of action for your treatment.
Maintaining good oral hygiene and scheduling regular check-ups at Lockwood Family Dental will help prevent future infections and extend the longevity of your root canal treatment.
